A Paper in Defense of Sibawaih
مساھمةفیالدّفاععنسیبویھ
Abstract
This study seeks to uncover the false claims of some grammarians who believe that Sibawaih quoted a poetic line by Bashar Bin Burd in fear of satire. For this purpose, the researcher has identified the classical grammarians whose works made that claim and found out that their claims were not supported with a proof. Having read the different editions of Bashar Bin Burd’s Diwan of poetry, the researcher did not find that line of poetry. However, the study demonstrates that the line was written by Abu Al Aswad Al Du’ali as it is mentioned in his Diwan. Accordingly, the study rejects the grammarians’ claims about Sibawaih.
